Melbourne Tabla School Concerts and Events

Introducing the 9th annual Melbourne Tabla School concert with tabla player Sam Evans and students of the Melbourne Tabla School. The concert presents Melbourne Tabla School students playing the intricate rhythms and detailed compositions from the North Indian drumming tradition of the tabla in unison. Accompanied by Denis Phelen on sitar, the tabla players perform in groups of various sizes in a diverse presentation of styles, speeds, colours and moods. With a vast compositional repertoire that presents drumming music as a detailed and beautiful language, the tabla is one of the world’s most incredible drumming traditions. UNISON is the 2015 concert from Melbourne Tabla player Sam Evans and students of the Melbourne Tabla School. The concert presents thirty tabla players playing the intricate rhythms and detailed compositions from the North Indian drumming tradition of the tabla in unison. Accompanied by sitar, slide guitar and electric guitar, thirty tabla players perform in groups of various sizes in a diverse presentation of styles, speeds, colours and moods. With a vast compositional repertoire that presents drumming music as a detailed and beautiful language, the tabla is one of the world’s most incredible drumming traditions.

Representatives of the Melbourne Tabla School will be performing for an audience of over 10,000 people in Victoria's premier school music event. Presented at the Melbourne Tennis Centre by the organisors of the recent Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony, The State Schools Spectacular is the largest school performance event in Victoria with over 2500 students performing under one roof. The Spectacular has never before had a performance of Indian music - The Melbourne Tabla School's tabla ensemble will be the first. The concert is open to the public and will be televised on Channel 7 to a national audience. Don't miss history in the making - grab a ticket or watch us on TV on Sunday 20th October at 2:30pm

Join us for an in-depth exploration of the art of tabla accompaniment and live performance by International Sitar Maestro Samuel J Dass. Samuel J Dass a multi-award winning performer that has reached the pinnacle of the classical and contemporary Indian music arena. He is a winner of 7 categories at the performing arts championships in 2010. He is a disciple of sitar master Pandit Shahid Parvez. He will be joined by Melbourne Tabla School teacher Sam Evans.

This concert will begin with an end of year performance by students of the Melbourne Tabla School, featuring 15 of Melbourne’s finest up and coming tabla players. Tabla students ranging from beginners to advanced will be performing intricate traditional compositions in small groups in unison with sitar accompaniment. With solo sections, spoken rhythms and complex cycles the music is a celebration of the rising interest in tabla playing in Melbourne.

The tabla school performance will be followed by The LIsa Young Trio, a new collaboration of Lisa Young (voice) Ben Robertson (double bass) and Sam Evans (tabla).Lisa is a member of the acclaimed vocal group Coco’s Lunch, and her Jazz quartet recently won the ‘BELL’ award for ‘Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album’ with their album ‘GRACE’. Lisa, Ben and Sam are well known to World/Jazz listeners as creative stylists and improvisers, incorporating Indian and African influences in their work. This new trio explores their diverse musical expression, layering Indian sounds, rhythms and textures in an evocative journey of song.
