Resources Open to Students at the Melbourne Tabla School

Indian Music and World Music CD Library
Students attending the Melbourne Tabla School have access to an CD library of Indian Music and World Music. The audio library features over 500 albums of Indian music and over 350 albums of world music. Students may borrow up to two CDs a week.


Music Book Library
Students also have access to a book library that features books on Indian music in both Hindi and English. The school owns many substantial texts published on tabla playing as well as many books on Indian music theory and Indian musico-cultural studies. The library also features books on western music theory, pyschology for musicians, musical philosophy, the music industry and texts on practice and musical training.


Loops and Leharas Library
Practicing to a lehara (a repeated melody) and practicing while playing along to music is an important part of making practice enjoyable. Of course you can't practice to just any music, you need the right music. Students attending the Melbourne Tabla School have access to a library of leharas (traditional Indian melodies that accompany solo tabla pieces) and audio loops in the form of audio files and midi files. The library includes a variety of pieces in each tal (time cycle) played on a range of instruments, both Indian and western.

 

Notations of Tabla Music
Students at the school enjoy access to a huge library of traditional tabla compositions that have been notated by Sam Evans. This saves students hours of time writing the music during the lessons as is the traditional practice. Students learn the pieces in the traditional aural system then have the pieces printed for them to take home in the complete form. The notations include compositions in all forms of tabla music collected by Sam through many years of study in India. The notations form part of the tabla book currently being written by Sam.
